Surprisingly large turnout considering the rain and the number of people who had skied Craftsbury this past weekend. Weston did a nice job grooming the loop and we had a good start and, except for the exasperating clock, a smooth race.

We had a big turnout tonight with 70 racers. Many thanks to Andy and Mark for orchestrating the start line-up and to all you racers for a very smooth race. My apologies for changing the distance and catching a few people by surprise who had paid attention to the original email that had one less lap than we ultimately ran. Additionally, I clocked the race on a gps unit and it is precisely 7.0 km. I didn't go back and correct the earlier weeks, but we've been doing longer distance than I realized.

The rain/snow mix subsided and the course firmed up (some might say solidified). We again had calm conditions and reasonable temperatures. There were a few tangles and the conditions led to a few edge-catch falls. I hope everyone made it through unscathed. I saw Tom Clemow's pole after the race and it looked somewhat like a feather duster down at the tip.

After near record warm temperatures today, the race loop was in surprisingly good shape. We had 53 skiers for the first race this year which is coincidentally exactly the same number we had for our first race last year. We did a circular start loop to try to make the starts a little less contentious and it seemed to work. We had a few glitches of course... first the clock decided to fail part way through the race. It doesn't affect results since it's a points race based on position, but I know most folks would like to get a time. We'll get the clock working before the next race... I should have checked it earlier.

We also had a near collision on one of the hairpin turns where a number of non-racing skiers were standing in the middle of the track. We should probably expect this from time to time since the race loop itself is not that obvious to the casual skier (it probably becomes pretty obvious pretty quick when there are 5 or so skiers bearing down upon you with eyes only for the finish line). We should make a point of warning skiers as we warm up for the race to pay attention and suggest that if they plan to stand in the track... don't.
